Some say only an insane person would claim they hear from God.
I think it is insane NOT to learn to recognize God’s voice. Give this song a listen, then come back and we’ll talk!
Normal conversation
Genesis says God and Adam talked to each other. The Bible says God talked with others, too —- Cain, Noah, Abraham, Jacob and Moses to name just a few. We don’t read that Adam or Cain or Noah or Abraham or Jacob or Moses were hallucinating or just imagining they heard voices. A real and thoughtful talk happened between God and each of them.
Text or email?
Not long ago I set up a Google Gmail account. Google asked how I wanted them to contact me — text or email. I thought of saying, “Neither way! I INSIST you come here and talk to me directly, face to face.”
But, hey! Good luck with THAT, right?
Should you and I insist that God do what Google would not? To speak to us in an audible voice — or not speak at all? If we don’t experience God through audible conversations, does that mean God is not talking to us?
Let’s see what God has to say about that.
Beyond text or email
Where and how does God makes Himself known? Here is an incomplete list of places He has given us to begin looking:
LOOK UP: Psalm 19 says the heavens proclaim the glory of God and the skies display his craftsmanship.
LOOK AROUND: Romans 1 says the creation demonstrates God’s power and authority
LOOK IN CHURCH: Isaiah 2 says people can go to the house of God to be taught God’s Word, and learn His ways and learn how to walk in His paths
LOOK IN THE BIBLE: His word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path
LOOK AT THE WORD MADE FLESH: Jesus Christ is called “the Word made flesh”. He makes God known to mankind. Read about him in the Bible
LOOK AT THE GRACE AND MERCY GOD GIVES TO HIS PEOPLE: God told Moses this would be part of how the Children of Israel would know God’s presence with them. It is still a mark of His presence today.
Eyes that cannot see, ears that cannot hear
Notice something about that list — everything is in plain sight. Everyone should be able to see the the heavens, skies, creation, churches, the Bible, and what it says about Jesus Christ, and God’s grace and mercy in action.
So, why don’t people see God? Why don’t they hear Him? Here is a short but powerful answer.
The Gospel of John says God is spirit. What is spirit? Dictionary definitions include words like:
- nonphysical part of a person
- seat of emotions
- character
- mood
God is spirit — so God is what? …. MOOD?!? CHARACTER?!?!? SEAT OF EMOTIONS? That makes no sense!
But wait! We DO find another possible definition:
spirit: “a supernatural being“.
This definition gives us something to work with.
I Corinthians 2 supplies more pieces to the puzzle, which help us begin to understand from the Bible WHY God remains hidden — silent — to some people.
“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.“
Who cannot know or receive the things of God? The “natural man” cannot.
That is awful!
Could anything possibly be worse than being unable to know or receive the things of God?
Well, not being able to know or receive the things of God AND thinking the things of God are FOOLISH — now THAT is is worse. These are the people who think a person who hears from God must be crazy.
The problem is they are “natural”. They can’t see or hear.
This is the condition of every person born into this world.
But God …
One other verse in I Corinthians 2 points us to the answer:
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
If a person wants to be able to see God when they look for Him, and hear God when He speaks, this verse shows the way: receive the spirit which is of God. Romans 10 puts it in these words: accept Jesus Christ as Lord and believe God raised him from the dead.
Romans 10 goes on to say the person who does this will NOT be disappointed in his expectation.
Don’t be crazy! Seek God on His terms. You will not be disappointed! God WILL talk to you.
God bless you lots!

LYRICS: God Will Talk To You
1) God will talk to you,
God will talk to you,
His love He shares
Because He cares,
God will talk to you.
2) God will talk to you,
God will talk to you,
In His Word of peace
You’ll find release,
God will talk to you.
3) God will talk to you,
God will talk to you,
Your cares you’ll shed,
He means what He said,
God will talk to you.
4) God will talk to you,
God will talk to you,
He’ll encourage you,
In things that are true,
God will talk to you.
