His Eye Is On The Sparrow

Hal means business

A customer saw this sign at Hal’s Hardware Store:

Because God will see you …

What does this have to do with our song? Give it a listen, then please come back for more.

It’s funny … but it makes you think

DON’T SHOPLIFT. That should go without saying. But just to be sure, Hal adds two compelling reasons:
1) God is watching
2) Hal might be watching
What a great idea! We are being watched, so act like it.

We are being watched — so act like it

I don’t know Hal, but I would love to meet him. Why? His sign makes me smile, and I’d like to tell him so. I don’t need to live in fear of Hal, but I certainly don’t want to cross him!

Isn’t it the same with God?

Hal and John Adams

Hal’s sign helps us understand what’s required for our government to work under the U. S. Constitution. John Adams warned:

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

All men are ruled — either from the inside or the outside. Through history most people have been ruled from the outside, often through harsh oppression. The remarkable freedoms we enjoy depend on enough citizens being ruled from within — “self-governed” — actually better described as “God-governed”. That’s how Hal approaches his shop, and that’s how the founding fathers approached our government.

Notice both Hal and our Constitution lead with “be ruled from the inside”. THEN comes the warning that if we will not be ruled from the inside, we will be ruled from the outside. In one case, you might deal with Hal. In the other, you might deal with oppression. History is full of examples.

When we understand what is at stake, we gain energy to preserve our freedom by obeying God.

Of course, if we ARE shoplifting … or doing something else we know is wrong, we STOP THAT!

But if we are doing our best to live honestly in the sight of God and men, and STILL feel God doesn’t like us, STOP THAT, TOO! We should refuse to sit in misery listening to the harping of the accuser. And we don’t sit in self-pity thinking God couldn’t seriously care for “a flyspeck like me”.

Ye are of more value

Our song celebrates the truth Jesus taught — a sparrow can’t fall to the ground without God noticing. And we are of more value. Not because of our works, good looks, or brains. But because GOD values us. God cares for us. God loves us. God is ever present to guide and protect us, if we’ll have His help and counsel. That’s His choice — and our immeasurable blessing.

So … let’s enjoy the blessing! Let’s bless God right back by welcoming Him into our lives in everything we think and do.

Practice the presence of God

Hal got it. John Adams got it. We can get it, too. An important key to living with power, love, and a sound mind is to live “practicing the presence of God.” Our song this week is a delightful reminder of this truth. Enjoy!

God bless you lots!

LYRICS: His Eye Is On The Sparrow
Text: Civilla D. Martin 1905
Tune: Charles H. Gabriel 1864

Why should I feel discouraged?
Why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely?
And long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion?
My constant Friend is he:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me;

I sing because I’m happy, (I’m happy)
I sing because I’m free, (I’m free)
For his eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,”
His tender word I hear,
And resting on his goodness,
I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path he leadeth
But one step I may see:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me;

Whenever I am tempted,
Whenever clouds arise,
When song gives place to sighing,
When hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to him;
From care he sets me free:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me;
