God has different names in the Bible that describe Him and help us know Him better. For example, Psalm 23:1, in Hebrew, calls God “Jehovah-RO’I” which means “The Lord my Shepherd”. God shepherds His people, He takes care of them. The verse adds, “I shall not want.” In Genesis, God is called “Jehovah JIREH”, which means “The Lord who sees and provides.” Since God sees and provides, “I shall not want”. In just 6 verses, Psalm 23 describes God in at least ten different ways that line up with ten of the “redemptive names of God” found in the Bible. This one Psalm teaches a lot about God! No wonder people love the 23rd Psalm so much! Compare this Psalm and these names for the Lord:
The LORD is my shepherd;
JEHOVAH-RO‘I – The Lord my Shepherd
I shall not want.
JEHOVAH-JIREH – The Lord who sees and provides.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
JEHOVAH-SHALOM – The Lord gives peace
He restoreth my soul:
JEHOVAH-ROPHEKA – The Lord that heals you
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
JEHOVAH-ZIDKENU – The Lord our righteousness
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH -The Lord is there
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
JEHOVAH-NISSI – The Lord my banner of victory
thou anointest my head with oil;
JEHOVAH-MEKADDISHKEM – The Lord that sanctifies you
my cup runneth over.
JEHOVAH-MANAH – The Lord my portion
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
JEHOVAH-CHELEQ – The Lord my inheritance
This song can help you remember “redemptive name” characteristics of God found in Psalm 23.
LYRICS: Psalm 23 – The Lord is My Shepherd
The Lord is my shepherd, He sees and provides
The Lord brings us peace, He heals and He guides
The Lord leads us right, So we know how to do
The Lord is my shepherd. He’s faithful, He’s true
The Lord brings the victory, He sanctifies
So we can be healthy and wealthy and wise
The Lord’s always with us, He’s never asleep
The Lord is my shepherd, His word I will keep.
Though times get hard and the sky dark and stormy
I will fear no harm, For He’s always with me
Surly goodness and mercy will leave me never,
And I’ll live in the house of the Lord forever
