Don’t You Know?

“Don’t you know? Didn’t you hear?” If a friend said that to you or me, it would probably get our attention. How much more should we perk up when “The LORD … the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth” says it? These words showed up in Isaiah as a challenge to God’s people back then. It is a challenge we can still benefit from now. That’s the idea of this song. Please give it a sing-along listen, then let’s look at “looking at Him”.

Wait on the Lord

Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel:
“My way is hidden from the Lord, and my just claim is passed over by my God”? Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength.
Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall,
but those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
[Isaiah 40:27-31]

Some points — He is not asking some “outsider” person “Have you not heard?” He’s speaking to Israel. Of course they had heard. But they were acting like they hadn’t heard and they were having a hard time because of it. These questions were intended to get their attention.

Isaiah reminds them who God is — He is the Lord, He is everlasting, the Creator of the ends of the earth — He does not faint or get weary. His understanding is higher and deeper than man’s.

Then Isaiah tells how to go from failed strength to renewed strength:
“Wait on the Lord”.
What wonderful instruction — here delivered as powerful admonition to those who
knew better
but forgot to
do better“.

What does it mean to “wait on the Lord”? It can include such things as prayer, praise, seeking the Lord’s will, exercising patient confidence in the Lord’s faithful promises to help and practicing His presence. To wait on the Lord means to keep our eyes on Him and not on any mess the world around us might be throwing in our faces.

Isaiah says in chapter 26, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you: because he trusts in you.”

Need new strength and perfect peace?
Do you see the path offered here?
Wait on the Lord. Keep our thoughts on Him.

Don’t we know? Didn’t we hear? Can we remember to act?

Saved from fears and troubles

Psalm 34 gives us more on living well in God’s care —
“I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth …”
“…I sought the Lord and He heard me …”
“…They looked unto Him …”

Results?
God delivered them from all their fears.
They were radiant.
God saved them from all their troubles.

Does it matter where we point our eyes?
Does it matter what we pay attention to?
Of course it does — if we want peace, strength and deliverance.

Don’t we know? Didn’t we hear? Can we remember to act?

What about the good things?

Are we supposed to disdain or ignore everything in this world?

Heaven’s no!

We just need to keep things in perspective. In Philippians 3 Paul summarized his resume — and it was impressive. He was tops in several areas.
But when he compared
the value of his accomplishments and pedigree to
the value of gaining Christ and everlasting life,
he counted his worldly credentials to be worthless.

That’s an important perspective.

But when it comes to advancing the Kingdom in this world, some of Paul’s worldly ability helped much. We can learn from that. There is work to be done here — for the Lord and with the Lord.

You may have heard talk or teaching on “The Seven Mountains of Influence” — areas that are in need of many, many Christ-filled believers to rise up as servant leaders.

  1. Family
  2. Religion – (Spirituality)
  3. Business – (Economy, Finance)
  4. Politics – (Government)
  5. Education
  6. Media – (Communication)
  7. Arts – (Entertainment, Celebration, Sports)

There are so many opportunities here, we could spend many lifetimes learning how to serve and lead in these mountains. But we only get the one life we have — so here is a vital area to wait on the Lord to find our places and get to work.

Christ makes our lives meaningful and able to serve in these important areas. To be successful we’ll need a steady supply of renewed strength and perfect peace. We’ll certainly need to keep our eyes on the Lord — don’t you know?

God bless you lots!
— Dale R.

LYRICS: Don’t You Know?

Song by Dale Reichel [2022]

1. Want to fly like an eagle?
Want to walk and not faint?
Want to run and not get weary?
Want to gain new strength?
Turn your back to the world and its shiny reward
Turn your eyes to Jesus. Give your heart to the Lord

2. Want your prayers to be answered?
Want long-waited for release?
Want your face to be radiant?
Want to know perfect peace?
Turn your back to the world and its shiny reward
Turn your eyes to Jesus. Give your heart to the Lord

Chorus:
Don’t you know? Didn’t you hear
How to find His peace, how to lose your fear?
Turn your back to the world and its shiny reward
Turn your eyes to Jesus. Give your heart to the Lord

3. Want your days to be brighter?
Want to win the race at hand?
Want to live life to the fullest?
Want to see the promised land?
Turn your back to the world and its shiny reward
Turn your eyes to Jesus. Give your heart to the Lord

Beth, Thanks for your note. It was so easy to find the dozen “benefits” promised to us for this song. So many to chose from. I tried to mirror the “attitude” I pictured Isaiah had when he asked, “Have you not heard?!?” Poetic license on my part, but so far the license has not been revoked that I know of. God bless you lots! –D.

Julia, Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for your kind words. Isaiah challenged the people along these lines … “Have you not heard?” I loved the “amazement” in his voice and tried to capture a bit of it here. So fun to list so many promises from God we could and should know about, promises that will change lives for the better if lived. Wonderful! Thanks again. God bless you lots — Dale R.
