God Is So Good

This traditional song is a profession of faith that works for kids of all ages. It is simple enough to sing and to learn quickly. The sheet music (get sheet free at “The Music Box“) includes an optional “descant” melody that someone in your gang could sing on an “ah” or play on bells or recorder, etc. Give it a sing-along listen and come back for a chat about watching and doing.

Watching is different from doing

It’s fun to watch football, basketball and even cooking shows on TV. It’s wonderful to attend a good live music concert. And why not? We know that professionals can do things better than we amateurs can. We are just thankful to be able to watch people perform who are really good at what they do.

Watching a pro play football delivers a certain kind of reward. But we don’t want to miss out on getting the very different and very valuable kind of reward that comes from actually chasing a football around a field with our own gang, at our own level.

Same goes for basketball.

Same goes for music. It’s one thing — many times a good thing — to watch someone else sing the songs. But there is a different kind of reward a person gets from using his own voice singing just for the joy of it even when — especially when — there is not a meeting going on.

When just watching someone else is not enough

There are many things in life that we must do for ourselves — things we cannot delegate to others. If I want a photo ID I must pose for the photo myself. If I want a massage I need to show up in person. And it just won’t work for me to send someone else to take a shower on my behalf.

The Lord, too, has given us things we must do ourselves and cannot delegate to others.

Romans 10:9 ends with “saved”. Before that verse gets to “saved” we find an “if”, a “you”, and a “confess with your mouth”. We cannot hire that out and still get the benefit.

1 Corinthians 11, speaking of communion, says “a man … himself … let him eat … and drink.” That’s another thing we cannot hire out and still get the benefit.

Ephesians gives us this one: “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”

And Colossians says: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

There is a connection between “the word of Christ dwelling in you richly” and “singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” We can sit in lots of teachings, and we can attend a lot of praise and worship services — and that’s wonderful — but nothing replaces I, myself, “singing and making melody” in my heart to the Lord.

Learn some songs and sing them. This is different from turning on the radio and letting the pro provide the music. There is a time for that, too. But here — YOU sing. Run lyrics you have memorized through your mind and let the melody your voice produces minister to your heart. Any time of the day or night, anyplace you find yourself, you can sing a song you’ve learned and let it bubble up inside and do its work for you.

Songs meant for singing

I’ve heard it said of top professional performers in music or sports “They were so good at what they did that they inspired some to start playing and discouraged many others into quitting.” We do well to guard our confidence and independence. Just because there is an expert TV chef out there that can cook circles around any twenty of us, he doesn’t discourage me. I am still confident enough to fix my own food for my own supper. Just because there are pros who can sink baskets from 50 feet blindfolded, that’s no reason to quit tossing a ball around with the gang and enjoying their fellowship.

No pro singer out there — even one who can break glass across the room with his “hallelujah” — can sing with grace in MY heart to the Lord. That is MY joy and privilege. The Lord knows — and has said — singing with grace in my heart is mine to make happen. Hallelujah and amen!

Most of us are not pro level singers. A lot of us imagine we don’t even sing all that well, and are pretty sure we are not going to sound like what we hear on the radio or from the stage at church. But that is okay. There are songs we can we sing — on our own — to help the word of Christ dwell in us richly — to sing with grace in our hearts to the Lord.

We can sing songs with good words set to singable tunes that require nothing more than our own voices to bring to life. A lot of folk songs are like that — singable, at least. A lot of the songs on this site are like that — singable plus they have good words — many of them songs that have blessed thousands over many years and are still fully charged and alive with bright blessings today.

“God Is So Good” is a simple song. It is never too early — and never too late — in life to learn such a song. Nobody cannot sing it. No one is too young — or too old — to learn this song and anyone could get a blessing out of it, any time, anywhere. Little songs like this store great treasure that anyone can draw from time after time, year after year.

Just think what could change for you this very day if you were to stir up in your mind and sing in your heart those words, “God is so good.”

God bless you lots,
Dale R.

This sentiment is helpful for personalities like mine. I often don’t want to attempt something for fear that I won’t do it right. An art professor encouraged me when he said to just ask myself if my solution “solves the problem.” If so, I should move forward. Perfection is in the Lord.

A secular song that celebrates a similar sentiment is below. Part of the chorus says:
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips

Dan, thanks for your note. I just heard this song for the first time recently. I think I need to pick everyone’s brain that I meet and try to find out what other songs they know that I don’t that still need to be added to this site. I heard John Newton, of Amazing Grace fame, wrote over 300 hymns. I only know two of them … Amazing Grace … not on this site as of this writing … and “Jericho Pleasantly Stood”, which IS on this site. But what about the rest of his hymns? There are a LOT of songs out there!! All y’all out there, send me your song suggestions! Thanks again — God bless you lots! -D
