Wide Wide As The Ocean

You and I measure our homes in inches and feet. This song measures our Savior’s love in heavens and oceans. Lyrics which paint a panoramic view set to a joyful melody make for a great song to carry with us through the day. Please enjoy singing along with the video, then come back for more.

Why are there oceans and heaven and Earth?

One purpose for land and sea and stars is they give proof in plain sight to everyone of God’s eternal power and authority. God says so in Romans. Some people disagree and want to convince other people that there is no God. Let’s get in on this conversation between two people arguing that very point:

“There is no God.”
“Do you know everything that can be known?”
“No, certainly not.”
“Do you know HALF of everything that can be known?”
“No, not even half.”
“Okay, fair enough. Let’s say you DO know half of everything that could be known. Isn’t it possible God could be in the half you DON’T know?”

When God says something is true, and some men say it isn’t, who do you want to believe?

Creation is God’s labor of love

The heavens were designed to hold the Earth.
The Earth was designed to hold mankind.
Mankind was designed to love God.
Why love God? A quick answer: He first loved us.
A complete answer will take eternity to answer.

What is this love of God? It is remarkable! He is faithful and committed to providing everything we need to live abundantly with “all sufficiency in all things”.

Love, mercy and grace

This song says “I, though so unworthy, still am a child of His care.” These are words to sing loud and celebrate often. We make mistakes, but God stays with us and helps us get back on our feet and live.

In Exodus 33 God made a huge promise to the children of Israel as they were about to begin a challenging move :

  • God would send His name ahead of them. (So some of the work would be done even before they got there.)
  • God would give them grace. (Grace enables a person to do even better than he could using only his own ability. It has been called “unmerited favor”.)
  • God would be merciful to them. (Mercy enables a person who has disobeyed to get back up and keep moving without condemnation or punishment. It has been called “withholding of merited judgement”.)

Love is huge, but God does not stop there.
God pays attention to His people and goes on ahead to prepare the path for victory.
God empowers His people to do great things needed to secure the victory.
God restores His people when they fall short so they can have another shot at gaining the victory.

The song says God loves us big — “wide as the ocean, high as the heaven above, deep as the deepest sea.” Those words get our minds going in the right direction. When things are going well, we can look to our Savior to love and hold us. When everything seems to be falling apart, we can still look to our Savior to love and hold us.

And the day is coming when I think we’ll be astounded at how much bigger than all of these God sees us.

The day is coming!

God bless you lots!

LYRICS: Wide, Wide as the Ocean
Charles Austin Miles, 1914

Wide, wide as the ocean,
High as the Heaven above;
Deep, deep as the deepest sea
Is my Savior’s love.
I, though so unworthy,
Still am a child of His care,
For His word teaches me
That His love reaches me everywhere.

I made a little song book for my Sunday school kids and for that song, wide wide as the ocean, I put Romans 8:39 and psalm 139:7-10… Emphasis on his love reaches me everywhere.

Hi Yolanda. That book you made will be a treasure for the kids. You selected wonderful verses to go along with this song … (Adding them here for others to enjoy, too … ) Romans 8:37-39 — “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” and Psalms 139:7-10 — “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.” Thanks much for blessing and teaching kids, and thanks for your note! God bless you lots –Dale R.
