Jesus I Come (Out Of My Bondage)

Another Bible song called “Complete In Him” has a line that goes, “There’s nothing more that I can do, Jesus paid it all.” Common sense tells us “nothing more I can do” cannot mean we have been called to sit still, stare mindlessly and do nothing. Hardly! In our current song “Jesus I Come” we look at something we MUST do. Both are wonderful songs, and both bring us different parts of the big picture. Give this song a sing-along listen, then let’s come back for a look at something that is clearly ours to do.

Who is driving this thing?

Years ago a large travel bus company advertised “Leave the driving to us”. When we travel in buses, planes and trains, most of us do well to leave the driving to someone else. But when our travel plans include getting to Jesus, we are going to need to do at least some of the driving to get to where the Lord is. Yes, the Lord has extended the right hand of fellowship to us, but we also need to reach out to Him to engage in the fellowship.

We begin by getting “born again, saved”. It is up to each of us to take the step to personally accept Jesus as Lord and believe God raised him from the dead (Romans 10:9).

This “born-again” thing we begin with is the one requirement for us to avoid being a failure in this life. In that sense, getting born again can be seen as a final destination — as “having arrived” — in this life. When a person gets born again, it is appropriate to pause, breathe deeply a few times, and shout “GLORY HALLELUJAH, I’M A BORN-AGAIN CHILD OF GOD and will live evermore with Him in GLORY!”

Getting born again can be seen as a final destination, as “having arrived”.
But, in truth, it is much more the monumental BEGINNING of an amazing journey.

The Lord has the map for us and provides what each of us needs for life’s journey. But it is up to us to drive ourselves — to move — as He leads. Isn’t that a wonderful arrangement?

The world gets personal

Our song mentions a lot of things that make this world a tough place to live — bondage, sorrow, darkness, sickness, want, shame, failure, death and more. The powers running this world want to kick each of us out personally, and they have plenty of ways to try to make that happen. But we are not without help!

Our song sings of an amazingly powerful counter-offense available to us.
There are two parts to this counter-offense:
1. Jesus Christ.
2. “I come to thee”

Here’s how it works:
When confronted with [ _______________ ] (fill in the blank with any negative),
our counter-offense is “Jesus, I come to you.”

When we sorrow, we reach out to the Lord.
When we are afraid, we reach out to the Lord.
When storms rage, we reach out to the Lord.

He is able and willing to see us through.
It is our part to recognize He is the answer, and seek His solution.

There are records in the Bible where the person needing the deliverance was not required to believe and act because they were not able to. Examples include very young children and dead people. But for people who can think and make decisions, God calls on them — on us — to believe His word and to seek His help and counsel.

To seek — to ask — to move toward Him — is ours to do.

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusts in him.
(Psalm 34:8)

It is up to US to taste and see. See it?

Back to the journey … let’s grab the keys to life from God’s Word and take this life for a spin! We have places to go, things to do for — and WITH — the Lord. HE IS GOOD!

God bless you lots,
Dale R.

LYRICS: Jesus I Come
Text: William T. Sleeper (1887)
Tune: George C. Stebbins (1887)

1 Out of my bondage, sorrow and night,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into Thy freedom, gladness and light,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of my sickness into Thy health,
Out of my want and into Thy wealth,
Out of my sin and into Thyself,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

2 Out of my shameful failure and loss,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the glorious gain of Thy cross,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of earth’s sorrows into Thy balm,
Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm,
Out of distress to jubilant psalm,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

3 Out of unrest and arrogant pride,
Jesus, I come! Jesus, I come!
Into Thy blessed will to abide,
Jesus, I come to Thee!
Out of myself to dwell in Thy love,
Out of despair into raptures above,
Upward for aye on wings like a dove,
Jesus, I come to Thee!

4 Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,
Jesus I come, Jesus I come;
Into the joy and light of Thy home,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of the depths of ruin untold,
Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold,
Ever Thy glorious face to behold,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Here is my favourite verse from that him, which sits between verses 2 and 3 of your selection:

Out of unrest and arrogant pride,
Jesus, I come! Jesus, I come!
Into Thy blessed will to abide,
    Jesus, I come to Thee!
Out of myself to dwell in Thy love,
Out of despair into raptures above,
Upward for aye on wings like a dove,
    Jesus, I come to Thee!

Brenda, thanks for your kind words and encouragement. Something I love about the songs on this site is that — like folk songs — there is not “one right way” to do them. The words and melodies can be sung and enjoyed as many different ways as there are people to sing them. If it works for the singer — it works! No complicated production, just melodies people make their own and sing from the heart whenever they want, whatever else they are doing. Thank you for being part of this adventure! God bless you lots — Dale R.
