Joy To The World

The Lord is HERE! Rejoice!!

This favorite Christmas carol was in our house long before I was. It is best sung with a group, so — please give the video a spin and we’ll all sing it together. 😄

A Psalm-inspired song

I’m told this song was based on Psalm 98.

Respected scholars suggest the Psalms in the Bible were written over a peried of about 1000 years, and include ten or more writers. including Moses, David, Solomon, Asaph, and others!

The Psalms have given people ideas — and the words — to celebrate God for many centuries.

Aspiring song writers TAKE NOTE! If “Joy To The World” is based on Psalm 98, let’s enjoy reading here, drink in its beautiful language and truth, and imagine the song WE might write after reading it.

Psalm 98

1 O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

2 The Lord hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.

3 He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

4 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

5 Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King.

7 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

8 Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together

9 Before the Lord; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

Painting of David by Gerard van Honthorst, 1622. David is NOT thought to have written Psalm 98, though he is credited with writing many of the Psalms.

Joy To The World

The Lord is come! The Savior reigns! He rules the world with truth and grace! The song’s lyrics reach out to express the magnitude of Jesus Christ.

These are wonderful words to know, to love, — and to sing.

God bless you lots!

LYRICS: Joy to the World
Words: Isaac Watts (1719)
Tune: Lowell Mason (1848)

Joy to the world! The Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King.
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the world! The Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy!

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And gives to nations proof
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders of His love.
