No Two Ways About It

God’s creative genius and love are seen in the fact that there are so many paths people can take to reach the same ends. Car broken? Take a bike. Bike broken? Walk. People are different and ways of getting things done are, too. Some people would not think of driving, and it might not even occur to others to walk. We hear wildly different testimonies of how people came to Jesus, and rejoice that variety is woven into Creation.

But for life’s glorious varieties to work, God had to design a few “yes or no” hard choices into the setup. Give “No Two Ways About It” a sing-along listen, and come back for a chat about life, death — and some elephants.

If we are all correct why are we fighting?

I love the story about the first time a group of blind men met an elephant. They could not see, but they could touch, and so they did.

The first touches the elephant’s trunk.
He says, “An elephant is like a thick snake.”
The second touches the elephant’s ear.
He says, “An elephant is like a fan.”
The third touches the elephant’s leg.
He says, “An elephant is like a tree trunk.”
The fourth touches the elephant’s side.
He says, “An elephant is like a wall.”
The fifth touches the elephant’s tail.
He says, “An elephant is like a rope.”
The sixth touches the elephant’s tusk.
He says, “An elephant is like a spear.”

Each blind man is correct in his own eyes. But their reports disagree so each suspects that the others are not telling the truth. They begin to fight.

Help arrives. A sighted man describes the elephant as a whole, giving the blind men enlightenment to “see” the elephant and return to peace.

The six blind men might have fought forever. Instead they learned from someone who could see what they themselves could not. God’s word and holy spirit do the same for us that the sighted man did for the blind men. Amen?

Other things to know about elephants

Elephant jokes were popular when I was a kid. Question: “How do you put four elephants in a Volkswagen?” Answer: “Two in the front, two in the back.” (Okay, not a great art form. But wait! There’s more!)

Another elephant joke went like this: “Six blind elephants argue about what men are like. They decide they need direct experience. The first blind elephant feels the man by stepping on him and declares, “Men are flat”. Each of the other blind elephants likewise feel the man, and they all agree.”

Our elephant jokester played with the same question you yourself might have had earlier — “Is their elephant study putting those six blind men in some kind of danger?”

I’ve taken a long road to get to this end:
With God’s light to guide us, we can walk confidently on the path of life.
Without God’s light to guide us, we are blind men stumbling uncertainly in a dangerous world and on the path of death.

Read the instructions

God is wise and (this) life is short. We need to hear from God. In the beginning He separated Light and Darkness. Later we read God IS light, and in Him is NO DARKNESS AT ALL. There’s an easy choice: go with LIGHT.

In the garden, God gave the first inkling there would be a savior and an enemy to try to stop the savior. There’s an easy choice: go with the SAVIOR.

God told His people, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. Choose LIFE. Enough said.

Jesus taught we cannot serve two masters. Either we serve God or we serve mammon. (Mammon has been defined as “material wealth or possessions especially as having a debasing influence”.) When it comes to the decision of WHAT to put in our hearts and WHERE to put our shoulders in service, there are no two ways about it. Hey, wouldn’t that be a great song?

God bless you lots!

LYRICS: No Two Ways About It
Words & tune by Lee Russell and Al Rainy

There’s no two ways about it
When you labor for the Lord.
His way only way
None other can you afford.
There’s a right road a wrong road
Which way you headin’ t’ward?
There’s no two ways about it
When you labor for the Lord.

You must decide or be denied.
Don’t give your love to Him halfheartedly.
Go all the way stand up and say,
“Gonna live my life for the
One who died for me” (Haleluia)

There’s no two ways about it
When you labor for the Lord.
His way is the only way
None other can you afford.
There’s a right road a wrong road
Which way you headin’ t’ward?
There’s no two ways about it
When you labor for the Lord.

Wonderful application of the age old Blind Men and Elephant story. Perception may be interesting but it cannot be considered truth. The greater the importance of the issue the more God’s truth will make the difference in success or failure.
Fun song – in this age of touting there are NO absolutes, it’s refreshing for us to remember that God has given us some and we best pay attention!

Frank, you did like the noble ones in Acts 17:11 who SEARCHED THE SCRIPTURES to see whether those things were so. Thanks for sharing the reference! God bless you lots. – D

Julia, I just saw an old Billy Graham devotional book and he pointed out the same thing we are talking about here … the wide path is full of danger, but the narrow path leads to blessings and good. Too many choices makes life difficult, so we need to stay in focus and keep our eyes on the prize. Thanks for your note! -D
