Sunshine In My Soul

Sometimes our minds roar recklessly at two-hundred miles an hour but get us nowhere fast. God gifted us with a wonderful place to steer our thoughts even at times like that. Give this song a listen, then come back and we’ll talk about getting that roar between our ears back down to a pleasant hum.

Oh soul, are you weary?

As a kid I gathered the word “soul” was an important Bible idea, but I didn’t know what it meant until I got older. I used to think a person’s soul was the part that went to heaven, but that’s not how the Bible uses “soul”.

Biblically, “soul” is human life. It is the part that makes a human body “alive” — able to think and laugh and cry. A body with no soul is dead. We speak of a live person as “a living soul”. Every living person has a soul.

The Bible teaches everyone is born with two parts, “body” and “soul”. When we get born again we receive “spirit”, becoming people with “body, soul and spirit”. The part that goes to heaven is that “spirit” — the gift we received when we got born again. See Romans 10:9-10 on getting born again and look at I Thessalonians 5 for more on “your whole spirit and soul and body”.

Our soul is where our thinking happens. Did you know God wants our souls to prosper? And God wants those with weary souls to be refreshed. In other words, God wants our souls to think and do well.

God made us to be able to choose what we think about. He also supplied us with excellent things we can choose to put in our minds.

God’s enemies continually offer no end of hurtful thoughts we can put in our minds. We don’t live very long before realizing we need to stay on top of which of these two sources we choose to feed our minds.

What’s the good word?

Of all the books in the Bible, none is more startling than Ephesians. It is amazing how much it says in only six chapters. Ephesians was written to “the faithful in Christ Jesus”. What does Ephesians have to say to that special group? For one thing, it says we were all born dead in trespasses and sins, without God and without hope. I’m happy to report the book does not end with those word. Not at all! Things brighten quickly with the words, “But God…” — the two greatest words in the Bible — but God made us alive in Christ.

Being alive in Christ is the key for our souls to prosper and not be weary.

How’s the weather in there?

“Sunshine In My Soul” is a song that celebrates souls prospering because of Jesus Christ.

In Christ we can have sunshine in our souls, regardless of storms raging outside us.

In Christ, peaceful and happy moments can be ours, regardless of clamor and sadness all around us.

In Christ, joy that defies worldly reason lights us up with spiritual songs we receive from Him — songs that drown out those ragged rhythms we used to get lost in.

In Christ we decorate the living room of our minds with gladness, hope, praise and love because of blessings He gives us now and joys laid up above.

In Christ we can rise above the fear of the world and walk in love as we move in areas of concern, interest and need, ministering to people and fighting the good fight to win, win, win — here and now and for all time.

Isn’t that a lot to think about? There is more where that came from. The good news is we can spend our time here — with the good news. We don’t even want to waste another minute entertaining thoughts that bring the bad weather indoors or that keep our minds racing but going nowhere.

In Christ, the forecast can always be “sunshine in my soul today.” Let’s honor Jesus Christ’s finished work and reflect it in how we think AND how we talk right here and right now. This is a good song to run through our souls today — with lyrics or just as a pleasant hum. ?

God bless you lots!

LYRICS: Sunshine In My Soul
Text: Eliza E. Hewitt (1851-1920)
Tune: John R. Sweney (1837-1899)

1. There is sunshine in my soul today,
More glorious and bright
Than glows in any earthly sky,
For Jesus is my light.

Refrain
O there’s sunshine, blessed sunshine
When the peaceful, happy moments roll;
Christ Jesus shows his smiling face,
Bringing sunshine to my soul.

2. There is music in my soul today,
A carol to the king,
And Jesus, listening, can hear
The songs I cannot sing.

3. There is gladness in my soul today,
And hope and praise and love,
For blessings which He gives me now,
For joys laid up above.
