Ask the Lord’s blessing
If we want God to bless what we are doing, we need to be doing something that blesses God. This song offers help on making that happen. Please give it a listen, then come back for more.
Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel
Like driving a car or riding a bike, living a life God delights to bless requires us to pay attention to the road. This song’s first verse maps out a route:
We gather together
We ask the Lord’s blessing
He chastens and hastens His will to make known
That might sound a little harsh. We gathered. We asked for blessing. He —- CHASTENS? — QUICK! Read in Hebrews 12: “For whom the LORD loves He chastens…” God does not see us messing up and just pat us on the back. He corrects us, not as a punishment, but so we become proficient in living with purpose and power, doing works He delights in.
What a beautiful relationship with our Heavenly Father! We can ask Him to bless us, and He, in turn, shows us personally how to adjust our course so we are better able to live our lives in the center of His will — and with the joy of His blessing.
When we ask for God’s blessing, let’s not think of it as “religion”. It is not just a nice thought we have and a nice gesture we do. Instead, let’s see it for what SHOULD be —- part of a two-way conversation with the Creator of Heaven and Earth, our Father. God has blessed us. God DOES bless us. Asking for His blessing opens the doors for Him to teach us and help us grow and learn. It is a way we go from blessing to blessing!
Beside us to guide us
The song’s second verse says God is “beside us to guide us“. What a wonderful picture these words paint. God is never too busy to watch and care for each of us, and to coach and guide as we need and as we ask. Our days go better and our lives reach further when we faithfully keep the conversation going with God.
It is good to thank God and ask Him for help.
It’s good to spend quiet time listening to His counsel.
Some of the best time we ever spend is just letting God speak to us.
Praise God. Ask for His blessing. Be ready to for God to show you how to tune your life to bless Him and enable Him to bless you even bigger.
God bless you lots!

LYRICS: We Gather Together
Translator: Catherine Winkworth;
Author: Martin Rinkart (1636)
Arranger: Eduard Kremser (1877)
1) We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
He chastens and hastens His will to make known;
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing:
Sing praises to His name; He forgets not His own.
2) Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
So from the beginning the fight we were winning:
Thou, Lord, wast at our side: all glory be Thine!
3) We all do extol Thee, Thou leader triumphant,
And pray that Thou still our defender wilt be.
Let Thy congregation endure through tribulation:
Thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
