“Do NOT think of a dog wagging its tail! He’s running toward you, happy to see you, and can’t wait for you to pet him. Do NOT picture a happy dog!”
Did you think of a dog just then? I admit I did, even though I was told not to. Why didn’t I think as I was told to think? Well, of course, because minds don’t work like that. The way we stop thinking about one thing is to REPLACE the thought with another. REPLACE! Continue Reading →
I’ve enjoyed this song for years, but never did understand what a “lower light” was. I knew the Bible says “you are the light of the world” and “let your light shine” and “walk as children of light”, but what does a “lower light” do? Recently I learned this song’s history, and learned what these “lower lights” are. It turns out lives depend on these lower lights and people have died when the lower lights were not burning. Give the song a listen, then come back and we’ll talk about being a “lower light” for the Lord. Continue Reading →

Earlier I posted this same hymn set to a different “traditional” melody. The “Adeste Fideles” tune used here might be more familiar to you. What might not be familiar is the third verse. Please watch the sing-along video — then we’ll talk about God’s School of Gold Refining .
WHAT gold is it God would refine?
Why — gold that’s yours and gold that’s mine! ?
Some artistic works enter public view and never change. Not so with this hymn. It used to have a different title. It is sung using at least two different melodies. Historians offer guesses on who wrote it. It had seven verses, but only about three remain popular. (I include four verses here — can you spot the unfamiliar one?) Please sing along with the video, then come back for a chat on praying in a closet. ? Continue Reading →
